Description: The aim of this seminar is to provide an introduction to systematic reviews and the methodologies used to conduct, report, and appraise them.
Participants: PhD students willing to approach to systematic review methodology.
Pre-‐requisites: None.
Learning Objectives: Upon completing the seminar, students will be able to:
• Define what is a systematic review; define what is a meta-analysis;
• Describe the essential steps of performing a systematic review and meta-analysis;
• Formulate an epidemiologic or clinical research question on their own fields of study, using the “Participants Interventions Comparisons Outcomes” (PICO) framework;
• Read a forest plot and interpret the results of a meta-analysis;
• Describe strengths and limitations of systematic reviews.
Methodology: A mixture of presentations and group activities will be used to introduce participants to major aspects of the review process. Example and exercises will be based on published systematic reviews.
