Course description: 

This course will provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge on the individual and organizational level, to develop original theoretical contribution within their doctoral research. Specifically, by relating to theories and exemplars from the field of organization and management, the course will help students understand the critical role of theory in developing a theoretical contribution. Students will learn how to achieve relevance and rigor in scientific research, formulate a research problem, specify research goals and motivation. The course will also focus on how to develop a constructive review of the literature to identify gaps, enable students to understand difference between building a theory and making a theoretical contribution, and understand key elements of theories, as well as what theory is not. Finally, it will allow students to develop logical arguments by including observed and latent constructs, measures, functional form of relationships, assumptions, and boundary conditions.
