Research Title:
Circular Economy and Industrial Symbiosis: new processes of localization and territorialization
Project description:

This project proposes to examine the role of the circular economy and industrial symbiosis in promoting new processes of localization and territorialization of economic activities. Through a research based on case studies and empirical analysis, the work will investigate how the adoption of circular economic models and the implementation of industrial synergies can influence the way businesses locate and interact with the territory. Industrial symbiosis refers to the collaboration and integration between different businesses or industrial sectors in order to optimize resource utilization, reduce waste, and improve overall production system efficiency.

With reference to the theoretical framework, the thesis will seek to investigate this concept in relation to the localization of activities, analyzing in detail the different theories presented in the literature, while also considering macroeconomic aspects.
The main focus of the research will be on the synergies between companies, which enable the exchange of by-products, resources, and skills among the different companies present in a specific territory. The goal is to understand how these synergies can promote the creation of a local economic ecosystem, where resources are efficiently used and environmental impacts are reduced.

Furthermore, the fashion system will be analyzed in terms of the relocation of production activities. This analysis stems from the fact that in recent years, many fashion companies have initiated relocation processes, namely the choice to move production from low-cost countries to countries closer to consumer markets or with more developed internal production capacities. An overview of the trends towards the relocation of production systems in the fashion industry will be provided, along with the associated challenges and opportunities. Understanding the factors that influence

the decision to relocate can support company management strategies and contribute to a more responsible and resilient fashion industry.
The importance of this study lies in providing an in-depth overview of circular economy practices and industrial symbiosis, and in providing insights for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and local stakeholders who wish to promote sustainable localization and territorialization processes. The adoption of a circular approach and the creation of synergies between companies can contribute to a more resilient economy and better resource management, while also promoting local development and environmental sustainability.
